About the Lab
The Raphael Lab for Brain Tumor Immunology studies cancer‑fighting T cells to develop new immunotherapies for brain tumors. From pediatric gliomas to adult glioblastoma, the lab’s research is strongly translational, aiming to turn immunology discoveries into therapies for aggressive brain cancers.
Scholar Profile
Itay Raphael studies the immune system with the aim of translating discoveries into clinical impact. His doctoral work at the University of Texas at San Antonio in Cell and Molecular Biology focused on T cells in neuroinflammatory diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. He then pursued postdoctoral research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, where he received a National Institutes of Health fellowship to study T cell–driven neuroinflammation, the first of several grants he has been awarded. At the University of Pittsburgh, he expanded his research to aggressive childhood glioma, integrating cancer immunology, computational biology, and neuro-oncology, leading to clinical trials at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.
Now at the Faculty of Medicine at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Dr. Raphael is establishing a lab focused on brain tumor immunology and immunotherapy.
