Yoav Matia, a Zuckerman Israeli Postdoctoral Scholar alum, did his postdoctoral research at Cornell University with Zuckerman support and returned to Israel to establish an independent lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. His path reflects the program’s role in helping outstanding Israeli researchers gain experience at leading institutions abroad and bring that knowledge back to Israeli academia. Building on his PhD research at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in fluid-structure interactions and his postdoctoral work on fluid-solid composite structures, Dr. Matia now studies “smart” structures and physical neuromorphic computing, developing materials that can sense, process, and respond through their own architecture. He returned to Israel after finding at Ben-Gurion University the research excellence and collegial environment he had been looking for, bringing with him the training and perspective he developed at Cornell while continuing the Israel-US scientific connection that shaped his postdoctoral path.
