Warp Speed Ahead: Solving the Mystery of “Galactic Cannonballs”
California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

Congratulations to Zuckerman Israeli Postdoctoral Scholar Hila Glanz on her publishing a breakthrough study in Space.com.

Using cutting-edge three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, Dr. Glanz and her colleagues demonstrated how violent mergers of hybrid helium-carbon-oxygen white dwarfs can ignite double-detonation explosions. The result: Stellar remnants ejected at colossal speeds— outpacing 2,000 km per second —fast enough to escape the Milky Way in its entirety.

“This is the first time we’ve seen a clean pathway where the remnants of a white dwarf merger can be launched at hypervelocity,” explained Dr. Glanz.  Her work not only addresses a long-standing cosmic puzzle, it introduces new insights into the mechanics of stellar explosions.

Dr. Glanz’s research exemplifies scientific rigor and imaginative discovery and puts Israel’s astrophysics community in the global spotlight.
